From the majestic Redwood forests, we continued our
journey southwards, still hugging the coast as we meandered and wound
our way along what is considered one of the most scenic roadways in the
entire U.S; the Pacific Coast highway. Treacherously narrow and windy,
this incredible stretch of roadway snakes it's way along the rugged and
wild northern Californian coastline traversing steep cliffs and spanning
across several bay's and inlets. Our average speed dropped right down
to a meager 20 miles per hour as we slowly coerced the hefty and sluggish 'A'rby' -
our adopted name for our R.V derived from 'Harbajan' to Harby via R.V -
along and around the twisting single lane. During this time, we spent one very memorable night in a deserted state park high up on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. With nobody in sight, expect a dubious looking Abalone diver, we created a heaving bonfire around which we successfully roasted a chicken in a discarded Weber shell.
The following day saw us continue to navigate our way down toward San
Francisco - not before another roadside lunch overlooking Salmon Bay and
a group of core 'Norcal' surfers dodging seals, rocks and the
knee-deep sandbank for a fickle and shifty righthand peak that broke
inside the sketchy river mouth. Needless to say, this portion of our
trip was perhaps the most scenic and at over 80 miles long, certainly
afforded us one of our more memorable drives of the entire 21 day trip.
